WATCH: Bomb squad in Dorchester

It's thought a hand grenade was found on St George's Road.

A Bomb disposal team descended on Dorchester today after a hand grenade was found on St George's Road.

Police cordons and road closures were put in place after archaeologists inspecting a site uncovered the item.

According to residents, the hand grenade has been found to be empty after inspection.

Video footage shows an army officer picking up the grenade and inspecting it alongside a police officer.

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said:

"We received a report at 9.17am on Tuesday 14 September 2021 that a suspected World War Two hand grenade had been found in a field in the area of Long Bridge Way in Dorchester.

"Officers attended and a cordon was put in place for the safety of members of the public as Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts attended to carry out an assessment.

"The item has been removed by EOD experts and the cordon is being lifted."

Road closures have now been lifted.
