RAAC (reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete) has been discovered in the of of the Poole Hub in The Dolphin.

Although RAAC was once a popular lightweight and more affordable alternative to traditional reinforced concrete, expired RAAC can pose significant structural issues.

The material is still present in many public buildings in the UK, as it is difficult to identify potential structural issues ahead of time.

The Dolphin (originally The Arndale Centre) was initially constructed in 1969, at a time when RAAC was commonly used in the construction of public buildings.

John Grinnell, Centre Manager of The Dolphin Poole said:

"After recent inspections, it’s come to light that the roof above Poole Library had RAAC involved in its construction.

"Our structural and building engineers are monitoring the situation and discussing solutions, ensuring there is no risk to the library’s staff and its visitors."

Whilst Poole Library can remain open, the upper floor Poole Hub is now closed until further notice.

Cllr Andy Martin, BCP Council Cabinet Member for Customer, Communications and Culture said:

"A building inspection carried out by The Dolphin has identified the presence of RAAC in the roof space of the upper floor of the Poole Hub.

"This floor of the building is currently used as office space for council staff and is not open to the public. As a precaution, we have temporarily closed this floor to our staff who are being offered alternative office accommodation.

"We have received assurances from the Dolphin management that the library and customer service areas, which are located on the lower floors of the building, can remain open to the public as normal.

"We are talking to The Dolphin to understand what plans they are putting in place to remedy the situation."

The Dolphin and BCP Council are working closely to reach a swift resolution.
