A police investigation has been launched after a fire was started deliberately at Dorset Council's offices in Weymouth.

At 5.20am yesterday morning (15 August) the fire service attended a fire at the Dorset Council offices in Jubilee Retail Park.

A preliminary investigation suggests that the fire was started intentionally at the main entrance of the offices.

Police appeal

Police Constable Bryce Scott-Jones, of Weymouth police, said: “We believe this fire was started between 4am and 5.15am.

“It could have had significant consequences had the building been occupied – thankfully it was empty at the time.

“I am appealing for anyone who was in or around the retail park at the relevant time and may have witnessed someone acting suspiciously near the council offices to come forward.

“Also, if anyone has any information about those responsible, please contact us as soon as possible.”

A spokesperson for Dorset Council said:

"In the early hours of yesterday morning (Monday 15 Aug) Dorset Council’s Weymouth Area Office sustained an arson attack. This building is primarily used by our social care teams but is open for any member of staff to use. There was some localised damage to the front entrance and reception area, luckily it appears the remainder of the building has been unaffected by fire, but it does have some smoke damage.

"We have provided alternative office accommodation for our employees while we assess what work we might need to undertake to make the building fit for use again."
