Stand Up to Racism demand reparations from Dorset MP
They claim Richard Drax is still profiting from his ancestors plantation
Stand Up to Racism Dorset claim that MP Richard Drax is still profiting from a large sugar plantation in Barbados.
Lynn Hubbard, the vice chair for Stand Up to Racism Dorset, claims the plantation is “very much up and running” and that “Richard Drax is still profiting from it today.”
She added: “I think it's true to say that he's made very little or no attempt for any reconciliation with people in Barbados.”
Now, the anti-racism charity has united with people in Barbados to put pressure on Mr Drax and demand reparations.
David Denny, the general secretary for the Caribbean Movement for Peace and Integration, believes “it’s time for slavery justice.”
He has accused Drax’s ancestors of transporting and enslaving African people in the 17th century and is subsequently demanding reparations for their acts.
David Comissiong, Barbados’ ambassador to the Caribbean community, noted: “We impose upon Richard Drax and his family a moral responsibility to contribute to the effort to repair the damage.”
However, Mr Drax has said previously that he doesn’t feel he should be held responsible for his ancestors actions.
Lynne informed us that the Barbados government, including prime minister Mia Motley, want the 600-acre Drax Hall estate placed in the hands of the local community so it can be used to benefit Barbadians today.
David Denny added:
“Our call is one that is genuine, and our call is one that will help to upgrade the standard of living in Barbados.”
We have contacted Mr Drax several times for comment, but he has not replied. We understand that he denies all these claims.
