Around 40 firefighters were needed to tackle a fire at a takeaway in Bridport town centre yesterday afternoon.

The fire started in the ground floor of the three storey building in East Street, and then spread to the roof.

Three people who were inside were taken to safety, with no reported injuries.

A spokesperson for Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue said:

"At the height of the incident, we had crews on scene from Bridport, Charmouth, Beaminster, Dorchester, Lyme Regis, Weymouth and Blandford, supported by the aerial ladder platform from Yeovil.

"The fire started accidentally in the kitchen of a takeaway restaurant on the ground floor of a three storey building, and it spread up to the roof via the extraction system.

"A total of 20 breathing apparatus wearers used three hose reel jets and a main jet to tackle the fire, and the ALP was used to access the roof.

East Street was closed while we dealt with the incident.

The stop was at 8.19pm and crews left the scene by around 11pm.
