New 20mph speed limits are set to be introduced in ten Dorset towns and villages following successful applications from local councils.

The initiative, which is part of Dorset Council's 20mph policy introduced in 2022, will see speed limit signs installed and operational before Easter 2026.

The various roads are in the following locations:

  • Beaminster
  • Briantspuddle
  • Gillingham
  • Lyme Regis
  • Milborne St Andrew
  • Pymore in Bridport
  • Ryme Intrinseca and Yetminster
  • Sandy Lane and Victory Oak in St Leonards and St Ives,
  • Upton,
  • Winterborne Whitechurch.

Dorset Council worked closely with town and parish councils to assess applications and consulted residents through a formal Traffic Regulation Order process.

Jon Andrews, Cabinet Member for Place Services, said: "These new speed limits are the result of a thorough process that begins with community interest. Each application was carefully assessed against clear criteria to ensure that a 20mph scheme will give maximum benefit for the affected communities.

"Our collaborative approach reflects our commitment to working closely with town and parish councils, supporting them as they bring forward requests.

“The policy gives our officers a clear and consistent framework for assessing these proposals and the initiative is a direct response to residents’ concerns about safety and wellbeing in their neighbourhoods.

“It aims to deliver the greatest benefit in areas where people live, walk, cycle or use mobility aids, helping to create healthier, safer streets for everyone.”

Further schemes in the pipeline

Twenty more applications for 20mph limits have also been submitted to Dorset Council.

Additional communities are considering schemes which, once reviewed, will progress through detailed assessments and public consultations as part of the next phase.

About Dorset Council’s 20mph policy

Dorset Council's 20mph policy provides towns and villages with the opportunity to request lower speed limits where clear community support has been demonstrated.

Rather than making the limit the default for all roads where people and vehicles mix, the council assesses applications with a focus on affordability, enforceability, minimal budget strain, and national guidance.

Applications can only be made by town or parish councils or the local ward member. Further details can be found at dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/20mph-limits-and-zones
