A new website's been launched in Weymouth to showcase several local walks for people who live in and visit the town.
Weymouth Trails is a collaboration between Weymouth Town Council, Dorset Wildlife Trust, and the RSPB, with many of the walks easily accessed from the park and ride site.
It's aimed at helping people to 'explore the town by fully immersing themselves in the natural beauty of Weymouth whilst improving their health and wellbeing either by walking or cycling'.
Weymouth Trails currently outlines nine walks: Nothe Gardens Seaside Saunter, Willow Walk, Round Ramble, RSPB Lodmoor, RSPB Radipole, Dorset Wildlife Trust Lorton Meadows Ramble, Heritage Walk, Rodwell Trail and Sandsfoot Gardens, and Lodmoor Country Park.
They are catered to all abilities, with walkers and cyclists using the website to navigate their way through the trails, using the photographic and text directions.
There also QR codes to scan on the RSPB routes, for hidden extras to enhance the experience.
Weymouth Town Council’s Climate and Ecological Emergency working group, Cllr David Northam suggested the idea and said:
“Weymouth has so much to offer, not just in the summer around the beach and harbourside, but all over the town, all year round. These first nine trails have been put together by people and groups who know Weymouth.
“They will take you to places you perhaps didn’t know, or to your favourite places but by new routes. So, enjoy the natural beauty, wildlife, historic sites, and buildings of Weymouth along the way. Walking has many health benefits, and I also find it much easier to talk with others while out walking.”
David Morphew from the RSPB said:
“This is a fantastic resource for Weymouth. We know a lot of people come to Weymouth especially to see the very special wildlife that makes a home in the town’s nature reserves.
“One of the joys of volunteering for the RSPB is being able to show visitors the best places to see the star species, such as marsh harriers and bearded tits. These trails will take them through the heart of the nature reserves and point out what to look for along the route.”
Nature Reserves Technical Manager, Rob Brunt, from Dorset Wildlife Trust, added:
“We are delighted that Lorton Meadows is featured on the new Weymouth Trails website – it’s a great way for people to get out into open green spaces and explore the wilder side of Weymouth.
“The Lorton Meadows nature reserve offers a haven of peaceful green meadows, hedgerows and woodland with an abundance of wildlife right in the middle of town.”
There will be more trails coming soon including cycle routes.
