Weymouth gets new covered bike parking
New shelters have been installed by Dorset Council
A pair of new covered bike parking shelters have been put in for Weymouth.
Dorset Council have installed facilities at Governor's Lane and at Harbourside.
They've been paid for through Government funding that the authority gets to improve transport infrastructure.
The shelters are both within walking distance to Weymouth town centre and have CCTV coverage.
Cllr Simon Gibson, Dorset Council Cabinet Lead Member for Highways, said:
“We welcome these new shelters. They offer more options for people to use and store their bicycles rather than use cars for travel to work or for leisure. This is good for the environment, their health and, of course, their pocket!
“Cycling plays a key role in our aspirations to reduce traffic and pollution as part of our Climate and Ecological Emergency strategy and action plan, so providing facilities like these new shelters will make it easier for people to leave their cars at home and cycle.”
These shelters replace a previous facility at Westham Bridge, which was removed due to vandalism.
Cllr Ryan Hope, Chair of Weymouth Town Council’s Service Committee, said:
“As part of the town council’s commitment to addressing the climate emergency in Weymouth, the new shelter facilities can help towards encouraging more people to cycle into the town centre.
“Now Dorset Council has completed the installation, Weymouth Town Council will take on their long-term maintenance, along with other highway cycle racks and benches in Weymouth.”
Motorcyclists wanting to use spaces at Governor's Lane will have them relocated, next to the new cycle shelter, in due course.
There's alternative parking around the town centre, including at Park Street, in the meantime.
