Dorchester has seen one of the UK's largest proportions in homes which have decreased in value, in the first half of 2024.

According to Zoopla, the average house price in the town in June 2024 was ÂŁ340,000, down ÂŁ1,500 from January.

Just under seven million homes have seen their value fall by at least one percent across the country, but the figure for the end of 2023 was double that, in a sign that house prices have been picking up.

An estimated 15 million increased in value by more than one percent from January to June 2024.

Calculations by Zoopla suggest homeowners in Oldham, Wakefield and Durham were most likely to see a rise.

Owners of terraced homes, in particular, are typically seeing more gains than owners of other property types, which is thought to have been driven by the popularity of "value-for-money" homes among buyers facing higher mortgage costs.

Izabella Lubowiecka, a senior property researcher at Zoopla said: "Growing buyer confidence and a rising volume of transactions in the first half of 2024 are translating into firmer home values.

"Half of UK homeowners registered value increases this year - the highest proportion since December 2022. For many homeowners, equity gains are an important part of unlocking their next home move."
