Public asked for views on Chesil Cove curved sea wall repairs
A consultation's opened - but work's not expected until at least 2026
We're being asked what we think about proposed repairs and updates to the curved sea wall at Chesil Cove.
The Dorset Coast Forum has opened up a public consultation |newtab) on the 'urgent action' that's needed there.
The current wall was built in 1965 to deflect waves and prevent slumping of the land above which includes the main A354 road.
Some repairs were undertaken in 2011, but these have now been undermined and the sea's eroding the southern end.
A team from Dorset Council, working with consultants, have identified a proposed work scheme for the cove which includes removal of the 2011 emergency repair works; replacing the sheet pile and repairs to the curved sea wall; and beach works including adding a geotextile blanket and rock revetment.
An outline business case is currently being drawn up and if approved, planning, funding and licenses would then be sought ahead of any works, which likely won’t take place until at least 2026 or 2027.
Esmari Steenkamp of Dorset Council’s FCERM team said:
“This is an important piece of infrastructure for generations to come and we are working with experts to achieve the best solution. The curved sea wall protects not only the landscape but houses, businesses and roads. Therefore, we want to encourage the entire community to come and speak to us. It is important that they share their opinions on the proposal.”
A public drop in event will take place at Portland Community Venue on Wednesday 25th September from 1.30pm until 4.00pm.
There will also be an online event on Monday 23rd September from 6.00pm – 7.00pm.
