Portland listed in worldwide 'under-the-radar' island destinations
A survey's ranked the top 'island escapes' around the globe
The Isle of Portland has been named as the 4th best destination in the world for an 'under-the-radar' island getaway.
Holiday rentals website HomeToGo has ranked islands worldwide, based on four 'hidden gem' indicators - comparatively low traveller demand, standing as a local secret, lack of social media hype, and limited overall awareness.
Places in The Netherlands and two in Canada were the only ones to be rated higher than Dorset's island.
Here's the top five:
- Wadden Islands, The Netherlands
- Quadra Island, Canada
- Magdalen Islands, Canada
4. Isle of Portland, England
- Egadi Islands, Italy
Barra Island and the Isle of Bute in Scotland were the only other UK destinations on the list, ranked 7th and 10th respectively.
The survey highlights what's so special about Portland:
"Tied to the mainland by the 18-mile long Chesil Beach, the Isle of Portland is the southernmost point in the English county of Dorset.
"Part of the Jurassic Coast UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Isle of Portland’s dramatic limestone cliffs, secluded coves and lighthouses make it a particularly picturesque place to visit. Holidaymakers can take in the sights on foot while following the Portland loop of the South West Coast Path."
