For the first time in a hundred years, there are plans to making changes to the facilities at Sherborne Abbey.

The historic building's set for changes to 'bring the facilities into the 21st century'.

If they go ahead, the existing ground and first floor vestries would be converted into a dedicated two-storey toilet facility, with a new vestry created in the north transept under the organ loft.

There'd also be a new hospitality area, for events and services, within The Lady Chapel area; and improvements to the accessibility, like wheelchair access, throughout the Abbey.

The Reverend Martin Lee, Team Rector of Sherborne Abbey said:

“Improvements to ‘comfort’ at the Abbey are long-overdue, and it was one of my promises, as the new Rector of Sherborne Abbey, to prioritise this work and to make the Abbey an even more welcoming and accessible place to work and visit. These proposals represent the most significant improvement to facilities at the Abbey since the recovery of The Lady Chapel in the 1920s, and I hope they will be welcomed by the local community and visitors alike."

The Revd Martin Lee says changes at Sherborne Abbey are 'long overdue'

The plans are on public display within the Abbey itself.
