An area the size of 18 football pitches has been burnt in a fire in Dorset.

Crews were called to Holt Heath near Ferndown yesterday afternoon.

They spent two hours bringing the flames under control to protect nearby homes.

A spokesperson for Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue said:

"On arrival it was clear that further resources were required to bring the fire under control, as it was spreading rapidly and there was the potential for domestic properties to be affected.

"Further fire engines, off-road fire engines, landrovers, a Unimog and a water carrier attended and firefighters tackled the fire and prevented spread from strategic positions.

"It was brought under control just before 3.30pm and most appliances were able to leave the site, although three remained to ensure the area was fully damped down.

"An area just under 10 hectares was affected, but all properties were protected and no evacuation was required."
