Fire crews were called in from Devon and Somerset to tackle a major barn fire in West Dorset.

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service were called out yesterday morning to a barn fire in Childhay near Broadwindsor, with 30 firefighters in attendance at the height of the blaze.

The barn contained hay and a manitou.

Crews used water from a nearby river to help put the fire out.

A spokesperson for DWFRS said:

"Due to the high temperatures the steel frame of the barn started to fail and was no longer safe to enter. The decision was made to allow the fire to burn under a watching brief."

"By 6pm, approximately 50% of the barn’s contents had burnt. We have maintained a watching brief overnight and currently have one crew from Portland in attendance.

"We’re hoping they will be able to leave the scene later this morning, and a reinspection held before it gets dark this afternoon."

It's not yet known how the fire started.
