Dorset father takes to Crowdfunder to pay for life-changing back surgery
Chris Piercy is trying to raise £25,000 to "get his life back" after failed spinal fusion surgery
A dad of two from Dorchester has launched a Crowdfunder appeal to pay for life-changing back surgery so he can be the dad he wants to be.
Chris Piercy told us he wakes up every day with severe backpain after a spinal fusion operation in 2020 failed.
Chris, who has had a series of proceedures says he can no longer wait to get the operation on the NHS.
He said: “Mentally, physically and emotionally I'm wiped out but the main reason for wanting to get this done is so that I can be the dad I feel like I should be.
“When I look at what I've been through, it's been my kids that have driven me to keep going and I can’t wait 18 months to two years for another NHS operation.”
The pain relapsed in April earlier this year, now Chris’ life, other than the occasional outing with his daughters, is largely restricted to his house where he struggles to walk upstairs or get off the sofa.
It all began when a disc slipped in Chris’ lower back, since then he’s gone through 4 epidurals, 2 microdiscectomies, 9 MRI scans, 4 X-rays, a CT scan and spinal fusion surgery which he was told “was unsuccessful and needs to be re-done.”
Chris told us: “No word of a lie, I wake up every day in pain. Sometimes it's just grumbling in the background but sometimes I can't do anything. I'm literally crawling up the stairs, so it's been a mental struggle has been a physical struggle.”
Chris has already booked the operation for the 2nd October, he said: “I'm hopeful that it might give me my life back and let me be who I want to be again,” he added:
“The recovery from the last spinal fusion surgery taught me what pain really is, hopefully this next one isn't going to be that bad.”
A Crowdfunder page has been set-up to help Chris pay for the lifechanging operation without having to empty his family’s savings or be forced to sell things to get the money.
At the time of writing, he’s raised £4,930 with the ultimate target of £24,560.
