Charmouth Beach bridge repairs delayed by a month
Dorset Council's been carrying out work to the boardwalk
Work to repair Charmouth Beach footbridge has been pushed back by a month, due to the freezing weather conditions in recent weeks.
Dorset Council's been trying to replace some posts and handrails there, and upgrade the decking to a more environmentally friendly covering.
But the cold weather's meant staff have been needed elsewhere, for road gritting operations, so the work is now due to be completed by late February.
The bridge will be open for the half term week though, from the 13th February.
When the project started, Councillor Ray Bryan, Dorset Council Portfolio Holder for Highways, Travel and Environment explained why the work was needed:
“The bridge has suffered from the effects of the weather since it was built in 2011 so the new boardwalk, made of longer-lasting materials, will help provide a structure that can remain safe and accessible for years to come.
“Many thanks to the rangers for their assistance at the site and our specialist team who will be carrying out the work. I’d also like to thank businesses, visitors and residents for their patience while we look after this important fixture."
Once the work is completed, the bridge will be fully reopened.
If you're planning to visit the beach while the bridge is shut, you're asked to plan accordingly.
There's also a plea from Dorset Council to 'take care' when visiting any of Dorset’s beaches.
