Boardwalk at Charmouth to be repaired from today
Dorset Council's carrying out work on the footbridge
The Charmouth Beach footbridge will be closed to the public from today (Monday 9th January) to allow for some important maintenance work.
Dorset Council say the boardwalk has reached the 'end of its serviceable life', so they'll be replacing some posts and handrails.
Prep work's taken place over the past week, with the main efforts starting today.
It's expected to be completed by February 3rd.
While the work's carried out, the bridge will be closed, but we're told that if condition allows, it could be opened for some weekends, depending on weather and progress.
The project's going green too, with the new decking made from recycled plastic materials, given the appearance and feel of wood, but lasting longer.
Any parapet posts and rails that are unrepairable will be replaced with a sweet chestnut wood replicating the original design.
Councillor Ray Bryan, Dorset Council Portfolio Holder for Highways, Travel and Environment said:
“The bridge has suffered from the effects of the weather since it was built in 2011 so the new boardwalk, made of longer-lasting materials, will help provide a structure that can remain safe and accessible for years to come.
“Many thanks to the rangers for their assistance at the site and our specialist team who will be carrying out the work. I’d also like to thank businesses, visitors and residents for their patience while we look after this important fixture.
“Finally, please always use sense and caution when visiting any of Dorset’s beaches. The Jurassic Coast is a wonderful place to visit, but it’s important to use common sense and caution – and always pay attention to warning signs and messages about staying safe.”
