Work starts today to 'rekindle the spirit of Barnstaple Carnival', which was cancelled last year.

Today at the Pannier Market there's a free Mardi Gras-themed family fun day, with events taking place all week.

It's hoped it will help kickstart the build up to a return of the carnival was traditionally held in September.

A spokesperson said: "Flourishing Barnstaple is proud to present 'Carnival!' at Barnstaple Pannier Market, running from Tuesday, 13 February, to Saturday, 17 February, aligning with the half-term holidays.

"The heart of the event lies in an exhibition featuring large-scale photographs capturing the essence of past carnivals in Barnstaple and around the world. The free exhibition is an opportunity to celebrate Barnstaple's long-standing community spirit and creativity.

"Mardi Gras will take centre stage on Tuesday, 13 February, with a family fun day in the market and on Butcher’s Row. The festivities will include live music, face-painting, crafts, circus fun and magic. It's a day for families to come together and experience the joy of carnival traditions.

"Adding a creative touch, free workshops will be offered throughout the week, featuring drumming, dance, circus skills, and carnival crafts. These workshops provide a unique opportunity for individuals to explore their potential contributions to this year’s carnival. All are welcome, but due to limited capacity, participation will be on a first-come-first-served basis."

Leader of North Devon Council Ian Roome, added: "I am enthusiastic for rekindling the carnival spirit in Barnstaple.

"With a vibrant array of events and activities planned at the Pannier Market throughout February half term, I encourage everyone to join in the carnival festivities and support our local traders. This is a community celebration, and all are invited to participate in the fun - and the best part, it's all free!

"The Flourishing Barnstaple team invites everyone to share their ideas and actively participate in the organisation of the carnival during these events. This initiative aims to create a sense of ownership and pride in the community, ensuring a carnival that reflects the diverse and vibrant spirit of Barnstaple."
