There's been an update on an investigation regarding two alleged sexual assaults in Barnstaple last year.

The first incident took place on Sunday 25 September 2022 which happened in the Gorwell Estate area of Bear Street.

The second assault took place on the corner of Derby Road and Beaufort Walk on Sunday 2 October 2022.

Yesterday (Friday 6 January), detectives charged Nicholas Ashby from Barnstaple in connection with the incidents.

The 40-year-old has been charged with attempted rape.

He's been remanded into custody and has appeared before Exeter Magistrates Court today (Saturday 7 January).

Ashby is now due to attend Exeter Crown Court on 9 February.

The Local Policing Area Commander for North and West Devon, Toby Davies, said: "Please note, that court proceedings are now active, so please do not speculate or post online comments in relation to this matter because it could be found to be contempt of court".
