Three men have been rescued after their car got swept down a river in Devon on New Year's Day.

The trio managed to get out of the vehicle on Saturday evening, but were left clinging to the roof.

Firefighters say they had tried to cross the Torridge at Woolleigh Bridge, without realising how deep the water was.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said two crews from Torrington and Bideford rushed to the scene, along with the specialist rescue vehicle from Barnstaple.

They have confirmed that luckily, the occupants were not injured.

In a statement, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said: "Two fire engines from Torrington and Bideford, along with the specialist rescue vehicle from Barnstaple, and two fire officers attended an area off Woolleigh Bridge near Torrington after reports of a car in water with occupants on the roof.

"One male called fire control reporting another car he was with had entered the River Torridge in an attempt to cross the river but had been unaware of the depth of the water on this night and had ended up being moved along the river.

"Three occupants in the car managed to get themselves onto the roof and on our arrival, three buoyancy aids were sent out to them while the boat was prepared to launch.

"By 19:14 the three males had been rescued by the specialist rescue boat and were back on dry land uninjured".
