Crews tackle large thatch fire in Torquay

People in the area have been urged to keep their windows and doors closed as smoke fills the air

Firefighters have been tackling a large thatch fire in Torquay.

The blaze broke out on Water Lane at 4.35pm yesterday afternoon (31 May).

Crews from multiple different stations were called to the scene, including Torquay, Paignton, Ashburton, Bovey Tracey, Buckfastleigh, Chagford, Newton Abbot, Teignmouth, Totnes, Danes Castle, Crownhill, Ivybridge, Modbury, Clyst St George, Bridgwater, and Street.

A statement on Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service's website said: "Fire control have received multiple calls to a thatch fire in Torquay.

"We have 12 appliances, multiple supporting/specialists appliances and officers on scene. Crews have confirmed this building is well alight and this information will be updated regularly."

Local residents have been urged to keep their windows and doors closed due to smoke.
