They had peeling paint and moss growing on them and the team say the work, done yesterday, improves the look and feel of the Triangle.

Volunteers gave the phone boxes a good clean inside and out before scrapping and sanding the outside ready to be painted with grey undercoat - as per the original instructions.

The boxes were painted with grey undercoat donated by local tattooist Nigel Pitman. Then on Monday the phone boxes got a coat of bright red paint donated by Deputy Mayor Peter Williams. The crowns were painted gold.

Deputy Mayor Peter Williams said: "It is sad that BT has neglected the phone boxes - however it was really fantastic to see people come together to take responsibility for their town and to give them the TLC a contractor wouldn't."

Cllr David Cox added: "Teignmouth has a great community spirit and this was a good example, pleased I was able to help."

The K6 phone box was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the coronation of King George V in 1935.

Around 60,000 kiosks were installed across Britain, making the K6 'the quintessential British red telephone box' but only 11,000 or roughly 20 per cent remain.

The two in Teignmouth town centre are listed.
