It has been confirmed overnight that a suspicious object has been safely removed overnight in Plymouth following the discovery of a suspicious object near the waterfront.
It had been suspected by a member of the public that an 'identifiable ordnance' was suspected on Pound Street, with a police cordon shortly put in place.
We're now told that is was deemed not to have been an explosive, and it has since been removed for disposal.
In a statement from the Coastguard, we're told: "At around 2.46pm yesterday afternoon, HM Coastguard was made aware of an object suspected to be ordnance submerged in waters at Stonehouse, Plymouth.
"Alongside Devon and Cornwall Police, an HM Coastguard Rescue Team from Plymouth and an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team were called.
"The item was inspected by the EOD team just before midnight, who deemed it not to be ordnance and removed it safely for disposal. All units were subsequently stood down."
Devon and Cornwall Police told us: "Police were notified at around 2pm on Sunday 16 March to reports of a possible unexploded ordinance on a beach near Royal William Yard, Plymouth.
"Officers attended to assist the Coastguard and clear the beach.
"An initial cordon was put on while EOD assessed the object, which was later taken away. The item was assessed and not believed to have been an ordinance."
