Six-hour thunderstorm warning issued for parts of Devon
The Met Office says there is a risk of power cuts and travel disruption
The Met Office has issued a thunderstorm warning for Devon, for areas east of Exeter.
The yellow alert is for possible thunderstorms, accompanied by heavy rain and strong winds.
Forecasters say up to 20mm could fall in a few hours in some areas, along with gusts of up to 50mph.
There is the risk of power cuts and travel disruption caused by possible flash flooding.
The yellow weather warning will be in force from 12pm - 6pm on Sunday 2nd January.
What can we expect?
The Met Office says a band of thunderstorms will move quickly eastwards, perhaps leading to some localised disruption. We can expect:
- Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
- There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
- Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
- There is a slight chance of some damage to trees and buildings, such as fallen branches and tiles blown from roofs
- The thunderstorm forecast states: "A band of heavy showers and thunderstorms will move quickly eastwards today giving a period of intense rain and perhaps 15-20mm of rain in a few places in an hour or less.
- "These may be accompanied by lightning, hail and strong winds with a low risk that some places could see gusts of 50mph".
