'Rural communities needed this U-turn' says councillors, as cheque deposit scheme reintroduced
Councillors had warned that 'removing this service risked increasing financial exclusion'
Councillors in Devon have welcomed a change which sees Lloyds Banking Group customers able to deposit cheques at Post offices
The change follows widespread concern from councils, MPs and community groups, including Devon County Council - which warned that losing the service would disproportionately affect rural communities.
Councillor Cheryl Cottle-Hunkin, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Rural Affairs and Broadband, said: "This is excellent news for Devon and for all those people who continue to rely on cheque payments as part of their day-to-day lives.
"For many residents, charities, community organisations, farmers and small businesses, the local Post Office remains an essential service. The return of cheque deposits means people can once again carry out important banking transactions close to home, rather than travelling long distances to find alternative facilities.
"We were clear from the beginning that removing this service risked increasing financial exclusion, particularly in rural areas where access to banking services is already limited. I am delighted that those concerns were heard.
"Our Post Offices play a vital role in supporting communities and local economies. This decision strengthens their future and provides greater convenience for customers across Devon."
She added: "More than half of Devon's population lives in rural areas, where many communities have seen traditional bank branches close in recent years.
"I would like to thank everyone who campaigned for this change. It shows what can be achieved when communities, councils, MPs and industry partners work together to protect important local services."
Councillor Stuart Rogers, Devon County Councillor for Ashburton and Buckfastleigh and a local Postmaster, also welcomed the announcement.
He said: "This is very good news for Devon's communities, businesses, farmers and voluntary organisations.
"Many people still depend on cheque payments and value the convenience of being able to carry out banking transactions at their local Post Office. For some customers, particularly in rural areas, this service is essential.
"Post Offices are a cornerstone of community life. Restoring cheque deposits helps protect local services and gives customers greater choice in how they manage their money.
"I would encourage people to continue supporting their local Post Office wherever possible. Every customer makes a difference and helps ensure these important community assets remain sustainable for the future."
