Devon and Cornwall Police have launched an appeal for witnesses after an incident involving an officer in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday, October 25).

They say the incident - in which an officer was assaulted in Exeter while on duty - happened between midnight and 12:10AM in Bartholomew Terrace.

That's near to the Catacombs area of the city.

Before the incident, the officer - a male Police Sergeant - was carrying out 'routine enquiries'.

It's reported he then was assaulted and sustained choking and punch injuries during the incident, before two members of the public intervened, coming to the officer's help.

He was checked over in hospital, has since been discharged, and is recovering at home - with the force thanking the members of the public for their actions.

A man aged in his 40s from the Honiton area has been arrested on suspicion of assault and being drunk and disorderly.

He remains in police custody while enquiries continue.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has information that could help the investigation, is asked to contact police via their website or by calling 101 quoting crime reference CR/098618/22.
