Devon and Cornwall Police have made a mandatory referral to the police watchdog after a fatal crash in Plymouth.

At around 2.00am on Sunday 21 January an Audi A1 failed to stop for police. Shortly afterwards, a collision occurred between the Audi and a wall on St Simons Lane at the junction with Salisbury Road.

Officers say the driver, a local 19-year-old man, was taken to Derriford Hospital but died a short time later.

A 19-year-old female passenger sustained serious injuries and was also taken to hospital, where she remains.

Assistant Chief Constable Nikki Leaper said: "Our thoughts remain with everyone that has been affected by this incident.

"The matter is now subject to an independent investigation by the IOPC therefore it would be inappropriate to comment further.

"Devon and Cornwall Police is co-operating fully with the IOPC investigation regarding this matter."
