Police crackdown on businesses in Devon and Cornwall as part of 'Operation Machinize'
Police are targeting cash-heavy businesses that may be linked to money laundering and sales of counterfeit goods

Devon and Cornwall Police are stepping up efforts to tackle organised crime in the region, targeting businesses suspected of being used to launder money.
The crackdown is part of Operation Machinize, a national operation led by the National Crime Agency (NCA) that focuses on cash-heavy businesses where large volumes of money can mask criminal activity. Particular attention is being paid to barbershops, vape stores, and other high-street outlets.
Teams from the NCA, regional organised crime units, and local police are working together by visiting businesses, speaking with owners, and gathering intelligence.
This joint approach helps authorities identify businesses being exploited and builds a clearer picture of how organised crime networks move their money through legitimate outlets.
Emma Brimicombe, Central Inspector for Plymouth said:
"The last operation that we carried out at the start of this month saw us recovering over £100,000 worth of counterfeit goods including vapes and cigarettes.
"We are having great successes and we hope that continues in the county."
The operation also involves close collaboration with immigration authorities, Trading Standards, HMRC, and the Fire Service, ensuring a coordinated response to a wide range of criminal activity.
Operation Machinize is ongoing, and police say they will continue to target businesses that are being used to hide the proceeds of crime.
