'Phenomenal' fans praised as Torquay look for promotion
The club - who are now out of administration - missed out on the National League South title on goal difference over the weekend

Torquay United's new owners have been thanking the fans for their highest attendances since the 1970s - as they're now formally out of administration and looking for promotion to the national league.
It means all of their tax debts, football and trade creditors now paid in full - giving the club significantly more financial freedom.
Completion of the CVA concludes the process which started when administrators were appointed on 5 April 2024.
They missed out on clinching the National League title, despite their 4-1 victory over Hemel Hempstead, because of Truro City’s 5-2 win over St Albans City.
Their second place finish puts them into the play-offs - all because of a goal difference - and they'll have a home advantage next weekend.
Speaking over the weekend, Head Coach Paul Wotton said: "The team have given everything all season.
"It's a strange mixture of emotions at the minute, and ultimately, the result was not in our hands.
"It's been a great season, so we've got blinkers on, and it's all full focus for Saturday.
"The fans - honestly - made me nearly start crying.
"They've been absolutely phenomenal. They were a credit to themselves - with many coming such a long way to get here.
"But, we've got to be positive, and keep going."
A 'significant moment'
Michael Westcott, co-chair at Torquay United AFC, said: “The formal exit from the Administration process marks a significant moment in the rebirth of Torquay United. When we entered administration, we were at the lowest league position in the club’s history, and many feared for our future. But thanks to the tireless work of our supporters, players, staff, and everyone behind the scenes, we’ve not only stabilised—we’ve thrived. This season we’ve recorded our highest average home attendances since 1971, and on the eve of the final game of the regular season, we find ourselves defying expectations with a shot at the title. That kind of turnaround doesn’t happen by accident—it’s the result of belief, resilience, and unity.
“An Administration process inevitably places enormous constraints on any football club, yet Torquay United has refused to be defined by them. Today, those shackles are finally off completely and we can move forward with clarity and confidence. For many clubs, Administration can be the beginning of the end—but for Torquay, it has been the foundation of an extraordinary revival.
“We are deeply grateful to Begbies Traynor for its professional stewardship throughout, and now, with the past behind us, we’re ready to build a bold new future for this great community club.”
'Part of the foundations of its community'
Julie Palmer, Regional Managing Partner at Begbies Traynor Group, said: “Torquay United AFC is a historic club and part of the foundations of its community, the surrounding area and football in the UK. But like many football clubs, it is also vital to supporting and growing businesses in the area and all these factors make its survival so important.
“The new owners, and everyone involved, have worked tirelessly to turn the club around working with the fans and local community to transform Torquay United AFC in a very short space of time. Its story should give hope for other clubs that are starting to see signs of distress and are considering whether to look for support.
“Fulfilling the terms of the CVA is the final piece of the puzzle for exiting an administration process. It will mean the club has more financial freedom, but also greater security and control over its own future. This is a very significant and positive step for Torquay United AFC and we are delighted to have helped.”
