Inspectors will from today start re-assessing Devon's currently 'inadequate'-rated children's services - and support for children with special educational needs.

The county council was given a £95-million bailout almost a year ago to try and improve the service, which was first given the rating in January 2020.

Opposition Lib Dem councillor Julian Brazil says change has been too slow.

Speaking ahead of the latest inspection, he warned: "These are families and children - some of the most vulnerable people in Devon - who are failing to get the support and the services they deserve."

James McInnes, the leader of Devon County Council, said changes are being made, adding: "I think they will see progress I am confident of that.

"How much progress will be a matter for Ofsted to determine.

"When we had our inspection last year - and we haven't seen a report from that despite what social media says - we had a couple of issues with that. We talked to Ofsted and said look we would really like you to come and look again."
