The town council say repeated attempts to make it a success have struggled.
Some visitors and locals have posted online that it’s a blow to the town and its traders.
Other say they can understand the reasons for the decision.
A statement from the town council said: “Brixham’s Pannier Market is to remain closed following a decision by Brixham Town Council’s Town Hall Committee to reject recommendations to offer the Market Manager a 6 month licence to occupy and a partial payment holiday.
“Members discussed the long history of the market and the heroic efforts by Market Managers over the years to provide a viable and sustainable experience for local residents and visitors.”
“This is a really sad day for us all as it is really painful to think of such an historic market having to come to an end”, said Councillor Steve Leech.
“But the sad fact is that markets all across the country are in retreat and the council feels that it has a duty of care to stall holders not to put them in the position of continuously making losses in an enterprise that stubbornly refuses to yield positive results.”
