Council leader Steve Darling is calling for a new furlough scheme for certain industries, such as hospitality, to be created to help safeguard jobs in tourist areas.

It comes as MPs on the Treasury Select Committee warn without further support there could be long-term mass unemployment after the existing scheme finishes next month.

Steve Darling says the impacts of job cuts are already being felt with a rise in local children claiming free school meals this September.

Mr Darling believes more jobs could go this Autumn unless action is taken by central Government.
