Teams have been tackling a fire at a North Devon beauty spot overnight.

Crews were first called to the scene at Baggy Point yesterday (Monday 29 August). At this time, it is unclear what the cause of the fire is.

Smoke billowing overhead could be seen from miles away, with many people taking to Twitter to share photos and videos.

At its height, there were six fire appliances plus special appliances at the scene, with two appliances there overnight. Around 20 acres of gorseland has been affected by the blaze.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said: "We were called at 5.18pm yesterday, there was a fire involving a 20-acre area of gorseland on the headland with a 200m fire front being driven by high winds.

"We were using hose reel jets and specialist vehicles to prevent the fire from spreading.

"There were six fire appliances plus special appliances at the scene at the height of the fire and we’ve had two appliances there overnight.

"We currently still have two appliances there damping down hotspots."
