A "significant" house fire is currently unfolding in Bideford.

There a currently ten appliances on the corner of Mill Street and High Street.

Devon Somerset Fire and Rescue say flames were coming from the roof when they arrived. They were called to the scene at around 5.20am this morning (Wednesday 7 September).

A spokesperson said: "We have ten appliances at a house fire on the corner of Mill Street and High Street in Bideford. Flames were coming from the roof when we got there.

"Neighbouring flats have been evacuated, police also in attendance."

People are being urged to stay away from the area.

New statement from fire service:

"There is a significant fire in a building of three floors used for domestic and commercial purposes.

"Fire Control received a number of calls and flames were seen coming from the roof on arrival. Neighbouring flats have been evacuated.

"Ten pumping appliances, an aerial ladder platform, water bowser, command unit, support unit, ambulance HART team and police officers are at the scene. Footage from police drone being used.

"Six breathing apparatus wearers, three hose reel jets and three safety jets in use.

"Stability of building to be assessed."
