Plymouth's Theatre Royal is giving new opportunities for South West-created shows to reach a larger audience.

The venue, which has three different sized stages and is run by a charity, has announced a new range of upcoming shows for its middle-sized 'Drum' stage.

Producer Franny Rafferty said: "The Drum, unlike our experimental The Lab, is a chance to upscale in some way.

“It's aimed at companies who might have been doing work in progresses or they might have gone out on a shorter tour - they can have a longer tour and a bigger, more intimate, amazing audience."

Many of the shows chosen for the new season have local connections. One show is called Glitch and tells the true story of the Post Office Scandal. The artistic director is Plymouth-born Toby Davies, who is still based in Devon. The sound design is from fellow city-based composer Benjamin Hudson.

The range of productions includes opera, drama, dance and children’s shows and the venue says the line-up is 'designed to surprise and delight audiences of all ages, the new season brings together powerful storytelling, striking movement and playful productions in a setting where audiences can experience performance up close.'

Rafferty believes there is demand for 'middle sized shows', saying: "I think there's a renaissance of the 'live' that's coming back.

"Screens took over our lives for a period of time but I think we're also hankering connection.

"We want to see things that maybe make us think. It's about going and for those thinking there's only one way I'm going to experience this - and it's live and in-person'."
