Four homes and pub destroyed by fire in South Hams

12 fire engines have been tackling blaze at the Tradesman's Arms in Stokenham

A fire, that is believed to have broken out in the kitchen of a South Hams pub, has destroyed four homes.

Fire crews were alerted to the blaze at the Tradesman's Arms in Stokenham, near Kingsbridge, just after midnight.

12 fire engines have been on the scene trying to bring it under control.

Everyone affected has been evacuated.

An update on Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue's website reads:

"We were called just after midnight about a thatch fire at the Tradesmans Arms pub in Stokenham, near Kingsbridge.

"The fire is believed to have started in the kitchen and has affected the pub and three terraced thatch properties. All people have evacuated and we currently have 12 fire engines at the scene.

"Firefighters in breathing apparatus are currently tackling the fire to bring it under control."

The A379 was closed this morning, but has since re-opened. Travel monitoring service INRIX says: "A379 in both directions re-opened, earlier building fire from Carehouse Cross to Kiln Lane (Start Bay Caravan Park).

"Closures have been lifted following a fire in the early hours of the morning. affecting traffic between Kingsbridge and Torcross.

"Diversion - via A379 Eastbound to Torcross, then A379 Northbound to Dartmouth, A3122 Westbound to Halwell and the A381 to Kingsbridge, and vice-versa."
