Thunderstorms are causing flash flooding across Devon, affecting dozens of people across the county.

Travel disruption is expected as heavy rain and lightning hits the region.

Some areas have reported power cuts and a number of roads have closed due to localised flooding.

The Met Office have issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms until 9.00pm tonight (8 September).

People are being told to expect:

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes or perhaps hail
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost

The Met Office has since tweeted urging people in Devon and Cornwall to 'take care if you are out and about'.
