Family Day for world's biggest pirate festival event
The three-day Brixham Pirate Festival is always a little calmer on the Monday
There's a children's parade on the final day of the world's biggest pirate festival in Brixham.
The Bank Holiday Monday is generally more quiet and aimed at young families.
Chairman - or captain of the event - John Ingram says many of the costumes wouldn't look out of place on a movie set.
He said:" There's guys that have got the same costumes made by the TV and film production companies that did the actual Pirates Of The Caribbean’s they're breathtaking - the artistry into their workmanship is fantastic."
He says the volunteer-run event also gives a knock-on economic boost, adding: "It literally brings between £8 and £10 million pounds to the Torbay and English Riviera area and then some come back and stay - so throughout the whole year it brings in £50 to £60 million in tourist revenue which is a big boost for the tourist economy of the South West."
A key attraction during the festival is The Golden Hind, a full-sized replica of Sir Francis Drake’s famous galleon, permanently docked in Brixham harbour.
This unique, all-weather floating museum has been entertaining visitors for over 50 years with hands-on exhibits and fascinating insights into life aboard a 16th-century ship. Festival-goers can explore its decks and enjoy special activities hosted throughout the weekend.
For those with a keen interest in ships, the beautifully restored sailing trawler, Vigilance, will also be open to the public. Built in Brixham in 1926 and known for its iconic red sails, the vessel is a proud piece of local heritage.
Carolyn Custerson, CEO of English Riviera BID Company, said: “We are delighted to be a sponsor of the Brixham Pirate Festival, as it is one of the English Riviera’s most iconic and well-loved events, bringing together our community, visitors, and local businesses in a vibrant celebration of our unique maritime heritage.
“With its incredible atmosphere, family-friendly entertainment, and historic setting, this is the perfect opportunity to escape your everyday and enjoy the spirit of Brixham."
