Exeter celebrates Railway 200 with new routes from train to trail
Stations at St Davids, Marsh Barton and Polsloe Bridge are being linked to the city’s Green Circle to encourage sustainable travel
A new campaign is launching in Exeter this month to connect the city’s train stations with its popular Green Circle walking and cycling route.
The project, funded through Great Western Railway’s Customer and Community Improvement Fund, is part of the nationwide Railway 200 celebrations.
It highlights how Exeter St David's, Marsh Barton, and Polsloe Bridge stations can be used as gateways to discover the city’s stunning valley parks and green spaces – while encouraging more people to travel sustainably and stay active.
The trail is a 12 mile distance, however walkers and cyclists aren't being pressured to complete it all! It's rather a chance to take in the green sights of the city and better mental and physical health.
Exeter City Council have led the campaign, hoping it will encourage more active travel and sightseeing.
Councillor Duncan Wood, lead councillor for leisure and physical activity said:
"There are so many beautiful spots in the city. This is about engaging with nature and staying healthy."
"Being active makes you feel good. Stresses and strains of modern life can be quite over-powering, but if you can get out and engage with nature and the real world, I think it really helps us to ground ourselves."
Breakdowns of the route can be seen outside of all three stations.
