Devon widower urges people to get their will during Will Aid
Ed Finch was able to fulfil his late wife’s wishes after losing her to breast cancer three years ago
A Devon man who lost his wife to breast cancer is urging people across our region to make sure you have a will written.
It comes as this month a charity campaign run by Will Aid means participating solicitors do not charge to write one.
Ed Finch’s wife, Diane, passed away three years ago. She had made a will detailing her final wishes, which Ed said made things easier for him and their now 15-year-old son during the difficult time:
"If we had not had it in place, things would have got very difficult at a time when things are hard enough.
"We don’t want to think about our own death, and we don’t want to think about what burden that’s going to put on the people around us. But actually, if we don’t spend that bit of time to think about it, that’s actually giving them a worse burden."
November is Will Aid’s annual campaign where participating solicitors waive the fee of writing a basic will and instead ask for a donation which is shared between its nine participating charities. Some of which are Age UK, British Red Cross, and Save the Children.
The 50-year-old Principal of Chagford Church of England Primary School said: "My wife was very keen to get things sorted out. Knowing she had that little bit of time left, she wanted to make things easier for me, for our son and the family, and she did."
Ed was advised to find a solicitor taking part in Will Aid after tweeting for advice on getting a will when a child under 18 is involved.
Since 1988 the campaign has encouraged over 310,000 people to write their will with a regulated and insured solicitor, raising over 21 million pounds in donations.
Peter de Vena franks, Campaign Director for Will Aid, said: "Getting a will is an incredibly important part of life, which helps ensure our wishes are protected in the evet of our death, while making things easier for the loved ones we leave behind."
