Devon and Cornwall Police say a man has been arrested after a blaze at a mental health unit in Paignton.

Nobody was reported to have been injured, but we know a 37-year-old man from Torquay who was taken into police custody has now been released on bail.

Devon Partnership NHS Trust say the building 'will be out of use for some time'.

A spokesperson from Devon and Cornwall Police told us: "Police were notified at around 2.50am on Thursday 20 March to reports of a fire at the Chadwell Centre on Torquay Road in Paignton.

"Police and Fire Services attended.

"No injuries were reported.

"A 37-year-old from Torquay was arrested on suspicion of arson. He has been released on police bail."

In a statement, bosses at the Devon Partnership NHS Trust said: "Emergency services responded to a fire at the Chadwell Centre in Paignton last night (19 March).

"The fire was contained to one area of the building. Thankfully, nobody was hurt and the cause of the fire and full extent of the damage are unclear at this point.

"The building will be out of use for some time and this incident will unfortunately cause some disruption to our services.

"We will do everything possible to minimise disruption for our staff and people who use our services, and to return to ‘business as usual’ at Chadwell as soon as it is safe to do so.

"Alternative arrangements are currently being made for the staff and teams based at the Chadwell Centre and the detail of these will become clearer in due course.

"Our staff are working hard to contact people who may usually have appointments at the Chadwell Centre with alternative arrangements.

"If you have any questions, please contact the usual team that you would see. You can find the relevant contact details on your appointment letters.

"We would like to thank our members of staff who have been responding to this incident since the early hours of this morning and the emergency services."
