A man from Totnes is taking action to help people living on the streets by handing out survival kits.
Philip Yonge was inspired to start the project after his friend, Michael Gething, died of hypothermia in 2012 while living rough. Now, Philip has created kits designed to protect people from the cold, especially in rural areas:
"After Michael died, I thought I could provide homeless people with sleeping bags, survival bags and waterproof clothing. It was essentially the cold and rain that killed him."
Each kit comes in a dry sack and includes a sleeping bag with a waterproof cover, as well as a waterproof jacket and trousers.
Philip has also set up a social media page to raise awareness of homelessness in the local community and provides ongoing support for those in need.
He hopes his efforts will not only help rough sleepers stay safe, but also encourage the public to think about the challenges faced by people living on the streets.
