A cricket club in Devon say they're "devastated" after a fire destroyed their clubhouse.

The blaze broke out at Heathcoat Cricket Club in Tiverton this morning (Friday 16 August).

The club say they're "shocked and saddened" by what has happened. A statement on their Facebook page said:

"Many of you will have already heard the devastating news that the club house at Heathcoat Cricket Club at Knightshayes has been destroyed by fire.

"On behalf of everyone at the club we wish to thank Devon and Cornwall Fire Brigade for their assistance and efforts to control the fire. At this stage it is too early to define the cause.

"Everyone connected to the club and in the cricketing community are deeply shocked and saddened by these events.

"We were incredibly proud of our remarkable clubhouse, however a club is more than just a building. A club is defined by its community and rest assured we will rebuild the Clubhouse.

"We will keep everyone updated as and when we have any information and plans surrounding matches and bookings."

The fire service say that their crew is currently still on-site. Although the fire has been extinguished, they are dampening down any remaining hotspots in the building to ensure safety.

Update on Saturday 17/08:

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said cylinders were reported to be involved in the fire, two of which then exploded.

Crews removed 12 gas cylinders from the building. The fire was deemed to be caused accidentally.
