Families in Devon making their annual Christmas getaway can expect to see some heavy traffic today.

The AA has issued an amber traffic warning for today and tomorrow... and 17 million drivers are expected hit the road.

Friday is expected to be busy due to traffic heading into Devon and Cornwall for Christmas, with the M5 around Exeter identified as a particular hotspot for congestion.

The worst queues are predicted between 10.00 and 7.00pm today - and around lunchtime tomorrow.

It comes as motorists are warned of a lane closure on the M5 which could cause further disruption.

National highways say drivers intending to use the southbound M5 between junctions 30 (Dawlish) and junction 31 (Bodmin) in Devon are advised to expect delays due to a lane closure.

The lane closure – lane 1 of 3 – is required while emergency repair work takes place on the Exe viaduct, which carries the M5 over the river Exe.

Drivers are advised to plan ahead and leave extra time.

The lane closure is expected to be in place until Saturday morning.
