Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service are urging people to be more water aware this week.
It comes as the warm weather coincides with the National Fire Chief's Council national campaign.
Steve Fisher is from the fire service, he said: "The campaign is to help raise awareness of everyday risks in and around water and to try and reduce the amount of lives that are lost by accidental drowning every year.
"So, interestingly enough, when we look at the figures for the the drownings in the UK.
"Around 273 people lost their lives to accidental drowning in 2023, and the key thing is that almost half of those people had no intention of entering the water.
"So we're looking at people that are using areas near waterways for running, cycling and walking and trying to make them aware of the dangers."
The fire service will be at Exeter Quay on Friday to offer more safety advice.
