A fire in Torquay, which damaged a number of properties last night (Friday 5th March), is thought to have been started deliberately.

Six crews from the town, Paignton and Newton Abbott were called to assist, including an aerial ladder platform.

Police officers were also called to the scene in Oakhill Road.

It was found that the fire originated from an external bin store which then spread to three properties.

Two properties suffered 10 per cent damage by the fire while the other was 5 per cent damaged.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue say the cause of the fire was deliberate.

"Fire control received several calls reporting a property on fire. One Fire Engine from Torquay and one from Paignton were initially sent. Due to the amount of 999 calls and information gathered by Fire Control, a further Fire Engine from Torquay was sent.

"On arrival, crews confirmed this fire was well alight and requested a further Fire Engine from Paignton and an Aerial Ladder Platform from Torquay. A Fire Engine from Newton Abbott was also requested for its flexi camera.

"This fire originated in an external bin store that spread to 3 properties. Two of the properties were 10 per cent damage by fire and the other one was 5 per cent damaged by fire. Crews used a Main Jet, Hose Reel Jets, Breathing Apparatus and Thermal Image Cameras to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire was deliberate and the Police were also in attendance."
