Investigation to take place after fire at industrial unit in Totnes

Teams tackled the blaze overnight

Fire crews from 12 different stations have been called to tackle a blaze at an industrial unit in Totnes overnight.

Teams were first alerted to the incident on Babbage Road at 8.08pm yesterday evening (Monday 25 April). Those in attendance included:

  • Torquay
  • Paignton
  • Ashburton
  • Brixham
  • Buckfastleigh
  • Newton Abbot
  • Teignmouth
  • Totnes
  • Honiton
  • Ivybridge
  • Clyst St George
  • Martock

On arrival, they saw that the building was "well alight" and spreading to nearby units.

An investigation will get underway this morning. The building was 100% damaged in the fire.

A statement on Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service's website said: "Fire Control received several calls to reports of a fire on Babbage Road, Totnes. Due to the number of calls five fire appliances and an Aerial Ladder Platform were mobilised to the scene.

"On arrival crews confirmed a fire involving an industrial unit, which was well alight, and spreading to adjacent units.

"The officer in charge requested a further three fire appliances and these were immediately sent on along with a Welfare Unit and Incident Command Vehicle.

"The fire is involving a single storey industrial unit, measuring 30 meters x 15 meters used for cardboard packaging.

"Update - 23:53 - The incident is starting to scale down. Two relief crews have been requested for midnight. A telehandler is now in use to start turning over and damping down. Fire investigation will commence tomorrow morning.

"Update - 03:40 - Equipment used throughout the incident is as follows:

  • Four breathing apparatus
  • Two hose reel jets
  • One attack and two safety jets
  • One thermal image camera
  • One triple extension ladder
  • One aerial ladder platform
  • One telehandler
  • Portable lighting

"The industrial unit was 100% damaged by fire. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time."
