COVID-19 variant case recorded in Torbay
The person who contracted it self-isolated outside the area
Torbay's Director of Public Health says a COVID-19 variant case recorded in the area is "not a cause for alarm" but to "remain vigilant".
As of 3 June 2021, one case of a variant of concern - named Delta - has been recorded in Torbay by Public Health England.
The person who contracted it self-isolated outside the area. The Council and PHE are continuing to monitor the situation.
"As is the case with all positive cases of COVID-19, close contacts of the person testing positive were identified and also asked to self-isolate. While there is no cause for alarm, everyone should continue to be vigilant in their COVID-19 safety."
Dr Lincoln Sargeant - Director of Public Health for Torbay Council
All viruses naturally mutate over time and sometimes a virus mutates in a way that it can spread more quickly. In this case, the variant is designated a variant of concern.
There is currently no evidence this variant causes more severe illness or makes vaccines less effective.
Torbay Council are urging the public to keep following COVID guidelines, including: keeping your distance, washing your hands regularly and thoroughly, covering your nose and mouth when inside, keeping buildings well ventilated and meeting people from other households outside.
