Controlled explosion on Devon beach after military device found
A device was found Leas Foot beach in Devon
A controlled explosion has been carried out on Leas Foot beach in Devon, after a device was found with US military writing on it.
Prawle Point Rescue Team were tasked to the reported ordnance on the beach in Thurlestone yesterday (Monday 20 March).
Upon arrival the team located the reported item and quickly established a cordon around the beach whilst photos were taken of the device.
The rescue team say the photos were then sent to their operations room (Falmouth Coastguard) who then forwarded them onto the Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit (EODU).
EODU quickly confirmed that although the device had been fired it was still extremely dangerous and the cordon was extended to 100 metres from the device.
Upon their arrival on scene EODU carried out a controlled explosion of the device which confirmed it still contained 'unspent phosphorus'.
We are being reminded that if you see anything unusual on the beach - do not move it. You should dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
