Charities and organisations across the South West that work with families struggling through the Cost of Living Crisis are being urged to apply for funding from Cash for Kids.

Greatest Hits Radio's charity raises money each year to support children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Since the cost of living crisis started, Cash for Kids has been providing grants to local grassroots organisations to supply children in the area with funding for things like food, clothing, and household energy costs.

Grants are £50 per child per household, with the aim to get the support to that child "as soon as possible".

Cost of Living grants available

So far, more than £2m worth of Cost of Living grants have been distributed nationally, supporting more than 25,000 children.

Michelle Williamson from Cash for Kids told us: "The money we raise goes towards helping vulnerable children and families who are still finding it so tough at the moment.

"I’d like to encourage any local grass roots organisation to come to us and ask about our cost-of-living grants.

"Working together we can do our best to reach as many people as possible.’

Child poverty figures top 4m

A new report shows there are more than four million children in the UK living in poverty.

Analysis of official statistics by Loughborough University for the End Child Poverty Coalition has seen an overall rise in families struggling in the years 2021-22, and that's BEFORE inflation sent energy and food costs soaring in the last 12 months.

It's thought an end to the additional support made available during the coronavirus pandemic has driven up the number of children experiencing poverty.

  • 29% of all children aged 0-19 are living in poverty, with an increasing number living in working households.
  • 71% live in households where at least one adult works, a rise of 6 percentage points since last year.
  • Lone parents in work especially are struggling with more than a quarter (26%) of all children going through poverty being raised by an adult in full-time employment.

Young DJ's fundraiser to support Cash for Kids

Among those helping us raise money to support even more families is eight year old DJ Archie Norbury.

He took part in a 24 hour rave-athon with KISS DJ and Strictly star Tyler West, getting behind the decks to encourage Tyler to keep dancing and in the process raising money for families across the UK.

DJ Archie said: ‘It was great to go to the KISS studios in London and help Tyler out with his raveathon.

"It was brilliant fun but I don’t know how Tyler kept dancing for 24 hours!! I know there are some children out there who aren’t as lucky as I am so it’s brilliant to be able to help raise some money for them.’
